Man Utd want surprise transfer, manager thinks player is in same bracket as Mbappe, Salah & De Bruyne

Manchester United are reportedly keen on a surprise transfer move for Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante this summer.

According to The Athletic, the Red Devils want to deliver the signing of Kante for new manager Erik ten Hag, though it seems this won’t necessarily be straightforward.

The report explains that Kante’s future looks a little uncertain as he has just one year left on his Chelsea contract, but manager Thomas Tuchel rates the experienced France international very highly.

According to The Athletic, Tuchel ‘considers Kante to be as influential as other world-class players such as Kylian Mbappe, Kevin de Bruyne and Mohamed Salah.’

This is some compliment, but it’s certainly true that Kante has been up there with the very finest players in world football for much of his career in the Premier League.

What next for N’Golo Kante?

Kante first broke onto the scene at Leicester City, helping them to a surprise title victory in 2015/16, and he then repeated the trick with a title triumph at Chelsea the following year.

Just last season, the 31-year-old was one of Chelsea’s most important players as they won the Champions League final, putting in man of the match displays in the final and semi-finals of that memorable run.

Man Utd would do well to add someone of his quality and experience to their squad, but it remains to be seen how realistic it is, as Tuchel surely won’t want to let such an important player join a rival.

Exclusive Fabrizio Romano column: How Mane transfer affects Salah’s Liverpool future, Spurs closing in on two signings, and more

It’s Monday morning and that means it’s time for Fabrizio Romano‘s latest exclusive transfer news column for CaughtOffside! Read on to find out the latest on Sadio Mane’s future and how it affects Mohamed Salah, an imminent double deal at Tottenham, and who could be in line to replace Romelu Lukaku if he leaves Chelsea…

Liverpool will certainly replace Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah is still staying next season

After the disappointment of losing the Champions League final on Saturday, I’m afraid there’s further bad news for Liverpool fans…

Soon Sadio Mane through his agents will confirm his decision to leave Liverpool. The choice was made for days, but the Senegalese wanted to be respectful and waited until after the Champions League final for communications.

Inside the club Mane’s decision is already known, but it will not affect Mo Salah’s situation which is completely different. The Egyptian still does not have an agreement with Liverpool for the new contract. It remains a difficult negotiation as both sides show signs of stubbornness with their demands, but Salah will stay for next season and the board will have the chance to improve their proposal.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane

Certainly, Liverpool will replace Sadio Mane should the deal with Bayern or any other club be completed. We may have to wait a bit longer to see how this pans out before learning more about who the Reds will target up front. As I’ve previously revealed, Fabio Carvalho is heading to LFC this summer and will not be loaned out, so it will be interesting to see how Mane’s departure could affect his role in Jurgen Klopp’s team.

Latest on Serge Gnabry and those Real Madrid and Arsenal links

Serge Gnabry’s situation is certainly complicated. Since October, Bayern have been in negotiations for the extension of their contract and have made a new proposal of around €10m net per season in recent days. Gnabry has not yet accepted, and Bayern have no plans to go beyond this figure.

To date, there is no offer from Arsenal but certainly Gnabry could be a top name on the market. Real Madrid have discussed it internally with Carlo Ancelotti in February but have never made an offer, their priority for the time being is to strengthen the midfield with Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni.

As I wrote in my column last week, Tchouameni has told his teammates that his priority this summer is a move to Real Madrid, despite interest from Liverpool. There have been ongoing talks between Real Madrid and his agents for a contract until June 2027.

Romelu Lukaku seeking clarity from Chelsea – could Christopher Nkunku replace him?

Romelu Lukaku has been evaluating his situation for weeks because his intention is to clarify as soon as possible what to do with Chelsea next season. Romelu would like maximum clarity after such a complicated year.

Still, Chelsea’s priority now is a new defender with Jules Kounde with whom negotiations are underway. In addition the new ownership wants to clarify the situations of N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount as soon as possible because they await updates on contracts.

Romelu Lukaku in action for Chelsea

The club’s priority is defence, while on the striker’s side there will be no movement for a few days. Christopher Nkunku is one of the many appreciated players within the club, but RB Leipzig want to keep him at all costs and have offered him a new contract. As I wrote previously, top clubs will need to come up with a crazy offer to change the situation.

Tottenham closing in on Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster signings

Tottenham had been working for two weeks to give Antonio Conte what he wanted: Ivan Perisic. Chelsea have been in the race since January because Tuchel is a big fan of Perisic, but they couldn’t make a proposal in time due to the sanctions.

Tottenham acted with smart strategy and the proposal was accepted on Friday evening: Perisic had an offer from Inter to extend the contract until June 2024, but his dream was the Premier League and so he will sign this week with Tottenham.

Antonio Conte will have new direct contacts with Fabio Paratici to define the targets for this summer, but in the mean time he will soon sign Fraser Forster from Southampton as the club’s new backup goalkeeper.

Has Erik ten Hag already found a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka?

As I recently wrote here, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is one of a few players facing an uncertain future at Manchester United this summer. The 24-year-old has never quite lived up to his potential since joining the Red Devils from Crystal Palace, and he now has Diogo Dalot as more of a genuine threat for his place in the starting line up.

Wan-Bissaka expects to have a direct meeting with new manager Erik ten Hag soon to discuss his future, but within the club the expectation is for him to leave in the summer.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka of Manchester United

Manchester United will evaluate the proposals: Crystal Palace have taken information, but only for a loan move. Man United are also expecting other clubs in the coming weeks, but certainly Wan-Bissaka has a chance to leave the club as well as Eric Bailly.

The new right-back will be decided later in the transfer market: it’s important to say that Diogo Dalot is a player on whom Ten Hag has had positive feedback. The young Portuguese looks like he could fit in well into Ten Hag’s style of football, so this could be a chance for his Old Trafford career to really take off.

Exclusive: PL club ask about Man United misfit as “direct meeting” planned with Erik ten Hag

Manchester United expect offers to come in for right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer, Fabrizio Romano has exclusively revealed in his latest CaughtOffside column.

The 24-year-old has not really lived up to expectations in his time at Old Trafford, and it seems he could be a target for his former club Crystal Palace on loan.

Still, a final decision has not been taken just yet, with Romano explaining that Wan-Bissaka is likely to have talks with new manager Erik ten Hag about his future.

Overall, though, it seems that Man Utd expect that Wan-Bissaka could be likely to move on this summer.

“Aaron Wan-Bissaka expects a direct meeting with Erik ten Hag to discuss his future, but within the club the expectation is for him to leave in the summer,” Romano explains.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka looks likely to leave Manchester United

“Manchester United will evaluate any proposals that come in for him. Crystal Palace have taken information, but only for a loan move.

Man United are also expecting other clubs to ask about a deal in the coming weeks.”

Some United fans will be disappointed that this move never worked out, with Wan-Bissaka initially looking a promising youngster when he first joined the club in 2019.

It’s fair to say, however, that he hasn’t really improved enough since then, particularly in terms of his attacking game.

Modern full-backs are expected to contribute assists and chance creation, but Wan-Bissaka is a long way behind players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James in that department.

is anyone else really struggling to care about the club right now?

First thing first this is not about losing or being in perpetual bad form.

Been a united fan for 30 years. Lived near the ground and had a season ticket in the past. I used to watch literally ever game for years religiously. Where ever I was I would watch. United have been a daily thought and a release my entire life. I would escape other troubles in life with my love and obsession with the club and football. It was bred into me through family and friends, I was surrounded by it. Friends and family all United fans or rivals.

The last few years however and particularly this one I have reached a new low. I just cannot maintain my passion at the moment when watching a group of players who just don't care. How can I care when they don't. I feel totally disconnected from the club at the moment. Bad decision after bad decision. I cannot fathom how it can be run so badly. Last season I actively chose not to watch games and to do something else instead. That is madness for me. The club is changing all the time. It feels hollow right now to me. This isn't about winning, it's about trying to win. About believing the players and staff are all pulling in one direction. I just don't see anyone who cares when I watch games except the poor fans.

This Ralf leaving thing is just the same thing again. I feel like no one knows what the plan is. I want to be excited about the new season but I am struggling to care at all and that makes me feel ashamed.

Rangnick’s departure is a bit worrying

4 permanent managers sacked and 2 interim managers post Sir Alex and still, some of the same shit players are and still will be here. There’s no doubt that those managers did deserve the sack, but there’s a bigger picture. The manager is constantly the scapegoat. Let’s make no mistake about it, we can not forget that we have snakes inside the dressing of the club that we all adore dearly. I’m worried Ten Hag will fall into the same trap 2-3 years down the line and may as a result, face a potential sacking. Real change is needed – let’s be unified together as one all around the world, and keep putting pressure on this ownership. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! #glazersout 🔰🔰🔰

Pau Torres address rumours claiming he is close to joining Manchester United

Villarreal defender Pau Torres has addressed rumours claiming he is close to joining Manchester United.

Spanish outlet Cadena Ser has claimed that Torres’ representatives are ready to sign off a deal to take the Spanish defender to England, after the two clubs had agreed on a deal.

However, Torres has outright denied these reports, claiming no club has made an approach for him.

“Right now there is nothing at all, there is talk of many things like every year, I have peace of mind of being where they want me, at the club of my life and I have this offer right now that I value as very positive,” said Torres, speaking to AS, as relayed by the Daily Mail.

Pau Torres is being heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.

With the arrival of Erik ten Hag, there’s no doubt he’s going to want to completely overhaul the Manchester United squad after such a disappointing season.

The report also states that Villarreal have offered Torres a new deal, so if Manchester United want to stand any chance of signing the Spanish defender, they better act fast or risk spending a monumental fee to bring him to the Premier League.

Video: Crowd erupts as Manchester United loanee James Garner produces sensational tackle

The Nottingham Forest end erupted as Manchester United loanee James Garner hit a crunching tackle during the play off final.

Forest took an early lead through a Levi Colwill own goal, and the Championship were doing everything they could to hold on to their advantage. This was epitomised by the tremendous work rate from Garner to hunt the ball down and produce a sensation tackle on Danny Ward.

Manchester United man leaves the club after less than a year at Old Trafford

Manchester United have announced Ralf Rangnick will no longer be taking up a consultancy role at the club.

Rangnick spent last season as manager of Manchester United, with a view of taking up a consultancy role behind the scenes next season. However, Rangnick was recently appointed as the manager of the Austrian National Team.

The initial plan was to juggle both roles simultaneously, but Manchester United have now announced that Rangnick will leave the club, as seen in the tweet below.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

After a disappointing season for Manchester United, the club appointed Erik ten Hag as their manager, and the Dutchman was originally going to be working closely with Rangnick.

However, Rangnick has announced that he will be unable to fully commit to both roles.

It will be interesting to see if Manchester United appoint a new man in the consultancy role, or if they stick to their current model with a Director of Football overseeing operations.

The Manchester club are set for a busy summer, with Ten Hag looking to completely overhaul the current squad after a disappointing Premier League season. The club may reconsider their current list of transfer targets, as Rangnick would have been drawing up a list of players for the club to sign in the summer.

Jurrien Timber & Pau Torres both wanted by Man Utd but transfer stance could hand opportunity to Chelsea

Manchester United reportedly look unlikely to sign both Jurrien Timber and Pau Torres in the same summer, according to the latest transfer news on these major sagas.

The Red Devils need to strengthen at the back ahead of next season, and it seems progress is being made on negotiations to sign Timber from Ajax, according to Todo Fichajes.

The report adds that if Man Utd sign the young Dutchman, they won’t also sign Villarreal defender Torres, which could be good news for other clubs.

The Spain international has also recently been linked with Chelsea by the print edition of El Periodico Mediterraneo, as translated by Sport Witness.

Chelsea have serious issues in defence at the moment as Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are both out of contract, so there’s surely room for Torres at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have also been linked with Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde by The Athletic, and it will be interesting to see which defenders these top clubs prioritise this summer.

Unfortunately for Torres, there does seem to be the slight impression that he isn’t the top priority target for either United or Chelsea.

If the Premier League is the best in the world, why do Liverpool, United & City underachieve in the Champions League?

One year, it’s two of the worst goalkeeping blunders you’ll ever see from Loris Karius – four years later, it’s one of the all-time great Champions League final performances by a goalkeeper from Thibaut Courtois. Every final is different, with so many in the last two decades potentially going another way if not for one-off moments of magic or bits of luck here and there.

And yet one pattern is the same – despite the Premier League getting stronger and stronger, our clubs continue to underachieve on the European stage.

Since 2004, we’ve had eleven Champions League finals involving English clubs. Of those, there were three all-English finals. From the other eight, we have just two wins, both on penalties – Liverpool against AC Milan in 2005, and Chelsea against Bayern Munich in 2012.

It seems noteworthy that both those wins, as well as Chelsea’s over Manchester City last season, came at a time when those teams were quite a long way off being at their best in the Premier League. Could it actually be that the intense competition of the English top flight means our clubs are just too exhausted in comparison to their European rivals once we get to these games at the end of the season?

Liverpool certainly started well last night, but looked tired, and struggled more as the game went on. This is hardly surprising, given that they played 63 games in all competitions in 2021/22, to Real Madrid’s 56, with both of their domestic cup final wins going to extra time and an extremely close title race going to the final day. It sounds silly to say it, but have Jurgen Klopp’s men suffered from being too good?

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Rival fans will make predictable jokes about Liverpool bottling it when it mattered most, but the fact is that this team was just one point away from the title, and lost by only a one-goal margin in the Champions League final, where they were largely the better team even if not at their full-flowing best. Their points tally in the league would have seen them finish above Arsenal’s Invincibles, Manchester United’s treble winners, and many other of the country’s great teams, but it now seems the Premier League has become so competitive that it’s costing its clubs on the European stage.

Similarly, great Man United teams managed by Sir Alex Ferguson were thoroughly outplayed by Barcelona in two finals. Pep Guardiola, the manager of Barca in those two finals, has not been able to juggle league and European success in the same way at Man City, such is the insane level of intensity required to pull away from Liverpool in the Premier League.

Not being involved in a title race has proven a blessing in disguise for England’s recent European winners – Liverpool finished 5th in 2004/05, while Chelsea finished 6th and 4th respectively in the years they won the competition. It shouldn’t make much logical sense that our fifth or sixth best teams should be able to be crowned champions of Europe while our better teams struggle when facing their European counterparts, and yet there does seem to be a bit of a pattern there.

The Premier League continues to go from strength to strength, with many of the best players and managers in the world now working in England. Man City and Liverpool are some way out it in front of the rest, but have little to show for it in Europe. This is now their biggest challenge, and it will be interesting to see if it’s one they can learn how to overcome in the next few years.

Cristiano Ronaldo wanted by surprise Serie A team

Manchester United are set for a busy summer. Not only are the Red Devils poised to make several signings, but they could also be set to lose multiple players.

One of the Red Devils’ latest big-name players to be linked with a surprise summer transfer is star striker and club legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

That’s according to a recent report from Il Messagero, who claims the Portuguese superstar is being eyed by Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

MORE: Offer made: Liverpool make approach to try to beat Chelsea to winger transfer

Following on from the side’s inaugural Europa Conference League win against Feyenoord last week, Mourinho is believed to be plotting some big summer business as the Italian side looks to continue their European revival.

Cristiano Ronaldo to Roma?

Despite the criticism, there is no denying that Ronaldo has been the Red Devils’ best player since his return 12-months ago.

Cristiano Ronaldo in action for Manchester United.

The Portuguese forward netted 18 goals during the 2021-22 Premier League season, forcing the question of ‘where would United have finished without him?’

However, following Erik Ten Hag’s recent arrival, although it is looking likely the 37-year-old will see out his two-year contract at Old Trafford, given his age and his new manager’s style of play, Ronaldo should probably expect to play fewer minutes next time out.

Whether the formidable five-time Ballon d’Or winner will accept more of a bit-part role remains to be seen though, but should he still have ambitions to be a team’s main man, then a surprise summer transfer could be on the cards and why not a reunion with Mourinho?

Three La Liga clubs in hunt to sign soon-to-be Man United free agent

Edinson Cavani’s contract at Man United will officially come to an end at the beginning of July.

The Uruguayan striker, who joined the Red Devils on a free transfer two seasons ago, will soon draw a line under his United career, leaving fans to wonder where the former PSG forward could end up playing next.

The latest comes from Fichajes, who claims there are three Spanish clubs in the running to sign the prolific hitman.

It has been reported that Real Sociedad, Real Betis and Villarreal are the trio keen to offer Cavani a route out of Manchester.

MORE: Liverpool player ratings: Trent Alexander-Arnold the weak link, Mohamed Salah unlucky vs Real Madrid

It is no surprise to see Cavani linked with a move away from England. The South American has never looked like he has enjoyed living in the United Kingdom.

Edinson Cavani will leave Manchester United this summer.

Although often delivering on the pitch, the experienced forward clearly prefers a climate that closer replicates his native South America.

Ahead of Cavani’s departure, former interim manager Ralf Rangnick confirmed recently that Man United will need to sign a younger striker.

“This is obvious,” Rangnick told a news conference earlier in the year, as quoted by ESPN.

“Edison’s contract is running out in the summer, and the club needs the best possible centre forward. This is an obvious one. I think everyone is aware of that.”

Since his move to Old Trafford in 2020, Cavani scored 19 goals and provided seven assists in 59 matches, in all competitions.

Ten Hag wants to spend the bulk of his Man Utd transfer budget on £115m-rated duo

Manchester United’s new manager Erik ten Hag reportedly has his eye on two priority transfer targets this summer.

The Red Devils need major surgery after a difficult season, and it seems Ten Hag is pushing for the club to spend the bulk of this summer’s transfer budget on Benfica striker Darwin Nunez and Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, according to the Daily Mirror.

The report states that these two deals could cost around £115million in total, and that it could cost Man Utd the bulk of the budget they have to spend on new signings ahead of next season.

Still, that certainly looks like it would be money well spent, with Nunez showing that he’s one of the most exciting young attacking players in Europe right now.

The Uruguay international scored 34 goals in 41 games in all competitions in 2021/22, and numbers like that will surely have him attracting plenty of interest.

United would do well to bring him in as an ideal long-term replacement for the ageing Cristiano Ronaldo, while they’ll also need extra options up front as Edinson Cavani comes to the end of his contract.

Timber also looks a big prospect for the future and could strengthen MUFC in defence after a poor season from Harry Maguire.

Ten Hag will know Timber well after they worked together at Ajax, and it makes sense to build around these two immensely talented young players for years to come.

Possible boost for Arsenal as Man Utd ace could replace Gunners transfer target

Manchester United midfielder James Garner is reportedly a transfer target for Leicester City this summer amid doubts over Youri Tielemans’ future.

CaughtOffside understands that Tielemans is set to leave the King Power Stadium, with Arsenal among the Belgium international’s main suitors this summer.

It now seems Brendan Rodgers has his eye on a possible replacement, with Man Utd youngster Garner on the Foxes’ radar, according to the Daily Mirror.

Tielemans has been an important player for Leicester, but Garner looks like a similar talent with his intelligence and quality on the ball in the middle of the park.

It remains to be seen what United will decide to do with the 21-year-old, however, after his impressive loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

James Garner celebrates a goal for Nottingham Forest

The Red Devils may feel it’s worth using Garner in their first-team, though a loan move to a Premier League club could also be good for his development as he might not play regularly at Old Trafford.

Arsenal fans will hope this means Tielemans is definitely on his way out of Leicester, as the Gunners urgently need to strengthen their midfield after missing out on the top four in 2021/22.

Man United taking risky transfer approach with pursuit of Barcelona star

Manchester United may reportedly be taking a risky approach to their transfer pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Netherlands international seems to be a top priority target for Man Utd this summer, but it remains to be seen if they can succeed in luring him to Old Trafford.

According to the Daily Star, the Red Devils are ready to make De Jong their highest earner if he decides to leave Barcelona for a move to Manchester this summer.

The report adds that De Jong could have reservations over the move due to the lack of Champions League football on offer at the club next season, but perhaps the big money can change his mind.

Many United fans will surely be unsure about this approach, however, as paying big money for players who don’t really want to be there hasn’t worked out well for them in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

It’s surely important to bring in highly-motivated players who will feel that United is a step up for them, rather than a pay-day opportunity.

De Jong is a fine talent, but MUFC would surely be taking a risk by forking out huge sums of cash for a player who has doubts about the club.

Bid prepared: Man United to approach Euro giants over potential swap transfer

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to try to seal the transfer of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in a swap deal involving Anthony Martial.

The Red Devils could do with making some changes up front, with the 2021/22 season ending pretty terribly for the club as they dropped out of the top four and failed to win any trophies.

If not for Cristiano Ronaldo’s impact up front, it would surely have been even worse for Man Utd, so it makes sense for them to try to land someone like Nunez as an upgrade on under-performing players like Marcus Rashford and Martial up front.

If United could offload Martial as part of this deal, that would undoubtedly be a fine piece of business to kill two birds with one stone…

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

It’s hard to imagine Martial has much of a future at Old Trafford, so using him to get Nunez’s price down seems ideal.

Still, with the Frenchman not doing much to impress during his time on loan at Sevilla, it remains to be seen if Benfica would be particularly keen on this offer.

Erik Ten Hag considering move for £18m Ajax midfielder capable of playing two positions

Manchester United have a long list of potential summer transfer targets.

The Red Devils, who are undoubtedly looking to rebuild their playing squad, now find themselves under the guidance of new manager Erik Ten Hag.

Having finished last season with a whimper, the 20-time league winners managed to limp over the line and qualify for next season’s Europa League – although only down to West Ham’s final day defeat.

MORE: Man United consider bid for ‘unique’ Chelsea star Tuchel said is a ‘fantastic player’

Following what has been a horrendous couple of seasons, the Red Devils must now work their magic in the transfer window and not only sign multiple new players but also offload those who have outstayed their welcome.

Two of those players are midfield duo Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, both of whom are set to leave next month after failing to extend their contracts.

Both Paul Pogba (left) and Jesse Lingard (right) will leave Manchester United this summer.

Therefore, two positions believed to be right at the very top of the club’s summer wishlist are the centre-back and defensive midfield roles and according to recent reports, Ten Hag may have already identified a player who is capable of filling both roles.

Man United and Erik Ten Hag to launch midfield raid on Ajax?

That’s according to a recent report from The Athletic, who claims the former Ajax boss is a big admirer of versatile defender Edson Alvarez.

Having previous experience managing the Mexico international, Man United’s Ten Hag could pursue a move for the 24-year-old, who is predominantly a defensive midfielder, but can also fill in at centre-back if and when required.

Speaking about his desire to impress the Dutch tactician, Alvarez, who spoke to Ajax’s official website last year, said: “Knowing that he wants to keep me is important to me. I feel happy at this club, with my teammates and the people around me, and the life I lead here.”

Although the young Mexican, who is valued at just £18m (Transfermarkt) still has three years left on his deal with Ajax and appears happy in Amsterdam, with the Red Devils understood to have a budget of £120m, it goes without saying that if they wanted to, the Premier League giants could muster the funds required to prise the midfielder away from Holland.

Man United and Newcastle looking to capitalise on defender’s stalling £25m move to AC Milan

It is no secret – Manchester United are set for a busy summer.

The Red Devils, who finished the 2021-22 Premier League season in seventh, are arguably as poor as they’ve ever been.

Now under the guidance of new permanent boss Erik Ten Hag, the 20-time league winners will be desperate to get back to winning ways, but it won’t be easy and will certainly come at a great cost.

Understood to be targeting a whole host of new players, as we exclusively reported earlier this month, Ten Hag and his backroom staff are looking to sign six players across five different positions, including a new centre-back.

Although there has been a lot of speculation over the likes of Ajax’s Jurrien Timber and Villarreal’s Pau Torres, another player to emerge as a candidate to move to Old Trafford is Lille’s Sven Botman.

That’s according to a recent report from Italian outlet Tuttomercato Web, who claims the Dutch defender’s proposed £25m (€30m) move to AC Milan has stalled due to some uncertainty over the club’s new ownership and that has opened the door for the Red Devils to capitalise.

MORE: Man United consider bid for ‘unique’ Chelsea star Tuchel said is a ‘fantastic player’

Recent times have also seen Botman, 22, heavily linked with joining Eddie Howe’s Magpies.

Confirming the club’s attempts to sign the 22-year-old during the January transfer window, Toon executive Amanda Staveley, who spoke to The Athletic, said: “We had to encourage players – ‘we’ll be a safe place for you, we’ll deliver and grow’. Some desperately wanted to come to us, like Sven (Botman), who still does very much and has talked very openly about that…”

A winter move for the Netherlands international failed to materialise though, leaving him with no choice but to see out the 2021-22 season in Ligue 1 with Lille.

Sven Botman in action for Lille.

Fast forward six months and with the summer transfer window now upon us, it is looking increasingly more likely that the 22-year-old will find himself a new club, sooner rather than later, whether that be at AC Milan, Newcastle or Man United remains to be seen though.

Sven Botman to Man United or Newcastle United?

Lille’s number four is understood to want around £2.5m-per year in wages and with the financial clout both clubs have, it goes without saying that Botman is an affordable target for Man United and Newcastle.

Therefore, should the player’s move to AC Milan collapse completely, it is likely that the centre-back will have his pick of St James’ Park and Old Trafford.

Although historically, the Red Devils would have been the more attractive option for any player looking to propel their career, that is not the case nowadays.

The Toon, under the direction of talented English boss Howe, is a team on an upwards trajectory. The whole atmosphere in the northeast has been transformed and with the club almost certain to have ambitions to qualify for Europe, Botman may be better off joining a project already underway, as opposed to one that has so far only promised to deliver.

Man United consider bid for ‘unique’ Chelsea star Tuchel said is a ‘fantastic player’

Manchester United must bring in at least one new midfielder this summer.

The Red Devils, now under the guidance of new manager Erik Ten Hag, will be on the lookout for a new central midfielder after quartet Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata all made the decision to leave the club this summer.

Ahead of Ten Hag’s opening campaign in charge of the 20-time league winners, the Dutchman is guaranteed to want an industrious midfielder – someone who can inject energy and willingness into a side that has looked lacklustre throughout the 2021-22 season.

MORE: Exclusive: Liverpool “alert” to Aurelien Tchouameni situation as he reveals transfer plans to team-mates

One player understood to be on the club’s shortlist is Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante.

N’Golo Kante (right) in action for Chelsea.

Man United to sign Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante?

That’s according to a recent report from The Guardian, who have claimed the Red Devils are ‘considering’ making Chelsea an offer for the enigmatic French midfielder.

Kante, 31, has been with the Blues since he moved from Leicester City back in 2016 in a deal worth £32m.

Since then, the France international has gone on to make 260 appearances, in all competitions, helping to reinvent the spine of the Blues’ team, in the process.

The 31-year-old’s importance to the Londoners cannot be underestimated. Manager Thomas Tuchel has never been shy in his praise for the defensive midfielder – hailing him a ‘unique’ and ‘fantastic player’ earlier this year.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

There are some concerns over the France international’s injury record though – according to Transfermarkt, Kante has spent over 100 days on the treatment table since the beginning of last year and that is a big cause of concern for Tuchel.

Whether United can convince the Blues’ impending new owners to offload Kante remains to be seen, but when it comes to their need for an established, consistently good and hard-working midfielder with Premier League experience, Ten Hag won’t find many more better qualified than Chelsea’s Kante.

Edinson Cavani reveals who should win Manchester United award

Manchester United star Edinson Cavani has explained who he thinks should win the club’s player of the year award.

It has been a campaign to forget for United, who had to settle for sixth place and Europa League qualification.

Top four would have been the aim for United, but they were some way off, and they even needed a favour on the final day to secure sixth.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got off to a disappointing start this term, and interim boss Ralf Rangnick continued the disappointment in the second half of the season.

Big improvements will be needed under new boss Erik ten Hag next season, but before then, United must hand out their end of season awards.

There will be a player of the year and a players’ player of the year.

And for striker Cavani, who will leave the club this summer, there is one stand-out winner.

“I think that overall, this season, the team has been a little inconsistent throughout the entire campaign,” Cavani told the club website.

“I don’t think that we ever managed to find that… how would you put it… that consistency during the season, whether it be in the group as a whole, or also on an individual basis. Sometimes it was down to injuries.

“Other times it was down to the dips in form that we can go through as players. But I think it was an inconsistent season for us, very inconsistent, in every sense of the word I believe.

MORE: United consult with ten Hag over big-money transfer

“But I think that the stand-out player for us this season, and someone who did show a little bit more consistency, playing well regularly and always being there for us, has been Cristiano [Ronaldo].

“I think that, apart from having a short period when he wasn’t getting on the scoresheet, which can happen when you are a striker, Cristiano was probably our one player who showed the most consistency.

“After him comes David [De Gea], as he has also been one of the most consistent performers in the squad, so together, they have been the most consistent and best players in the squad from our season this time around.”

Manchester United readying fresh bid for midfielder after failed January attempts

Manchester United are said to be weighing up a fresh bid for a midfielder.

United will need to sign at least one midfielder this summer, with Paul Pogba set to leave at the end of his contract.

And a number of players are already being linked as we wait for the summer transfer window to officially open.

One of the main players being linked is Wolves star Ruben Neves, and United already had a bid rejected for Neves during the January window, according to the Daily Star.

That bid was worth £35million, and Wolves are said to want as much as £50million for their Portuguese star.

Whether United are prepared to match that value remains to be seen, but according to The Sun, Erik ten Hag is now lining up a fresh offer.

It will be interesting to see just how close United get to that value, and indeed whether they can get their hands on their target.

Where do your loyalties lie? A rooting question for the sub.

Hey everyone.

I've argued with my dad for years, so I figured I'd ask the sub and prove to him how correct I've always been. He's in his 60's and English – it is his opinion that in a club competition like the UCL, you'd root for a team from your country to win no matter your club allegiance – in this circumstance, he'd argue if you were a Man United fan (which I am) you'd want Liverpool to win the UCL as they are an English club. According to him, an English club winning the tournament is paramount, no matter how you feel about them on a club level. I of course argue the opposite as I want Madrid to win – I could care less if the winning club is English, I'd never ever want a team I dislike (Liverpool, City as a United fan) to win a major club trophy like the UCL.

So, what do you think? How do you root?

Man United internally consult Ten Hag over big-name defensive signing

Manchester United have made steps toward deciding which big-name centre-back they will be pursuing this summer.

There has been plenty of speculation over which defender the Red Devils will look to target during this summer’s transfer window.

Two of the biggest names linked with a move to Old Trafford have included Ajax’s Jurrien Timber and Villarreal’s Pau Torres, who was originally shortlisted by former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as reported by transfer news specialist and CaughtOffside columnist Fabrizio Romano.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

However, the latest in the ongoing saga comes from the Manchester Evening News, who claims the 20-times league winners, including new manager Erik Ten Hag, have held initial talks over a possible move for Torres.

MORE: Exclusive: Liverpool “alert” to Aurelien Tchouameni situation as he reveals transfer plans to team-mates

Torres, 25, has been developed at Villarreal and was promoted to the club’s senior first team in 2018 before going on a season-long loan to Malaga in 2019. The Spaniard has made 47 appearances, in all competitions, for the ‘Yellow Submarine’ this season where he even managed to score five goals.

Why do Man United want a new centre-back?

It is no secret – United’s backline is well below par.

Poor individual performances all season long have seen the Red Devils fall even further behind rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

Although the club decided to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City back in 2019 in a deal worth a whopping £78m, the England international’s time at Old Trafford has seen him fail to live up to his sky-high price tag.

Harry Maguire in action for Manchester United.

Elsewhere, the likes of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have always failed to stamp their authority on the side – whether the manager is Solskjaer or former interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

Axel Tuanzebe is another senior defender who is linked with a summer move away with the latest club to sound out his services being Graham Potter’s Brighton and Hove Albion (Football Insider).

Therefore, with the majority of their senior centre-backs either surplus to requirements, or continuing to put in poor performances, it goes without saying that at the top of Ten Hag’s summer agenda will be a new centre-back, ideally one that is capable of improving whoever ends up staying.

Brighton and Hove Albion considering summer move for Man United outcast

Brighton and Hove Albion are on the lookout for a new centre-back signing this summer and Graham Potter could be turning his attention to one of Manchester United’s defenders.

According to Football Insider, Potter is an admirer of centre-back Axel Tuenzebe and with the recent departure of Dan Burn, who joined Newcastle United in January, Tuanzebe could serve as a perfect, and cost-effective, replacement.

Tuanzebe, 24, is due to return to Old Trafford this summer and with his contract set to expire in just 12-months’ time, it would be fair to assume that the Red Devils could look to cash in on the Englishman rather than see him depart for free this time next year.

MORE: Exclusive Fabrizio Romano column: Man Utd could sign star for below release clause, Liverpool have ambitious target for 2023

The Bunia-born centre-back has been on a series of loan spells over the last few seasons with his latest spell being for Italian club Napoli.

Axel Tuanzebe in action for Napoli.

However, after failing to force his way into manager Luciano Spalletti’s first-team plans, Tuanzebe made just two appearances before suffering an injury at the beginning of February.

Explaining to reporters his decision to omit Tuanzebe from Napoli’s UEFA registration, Spalletti, as quoted by Tutto Napoli, said: “I explain it badly, but then you have to explain to me the exclusion of another to include him. The moment you never want to be a coach is when you call a player in the office to tell him why he doesn’t play the tournament.”

Manchester United’s new boss Erik ten Hag will need to make a number of big changes this summer, including clearing the squad of redundant players and bringing in some much needed new talent, especially if the Red Devils have serious ambition to get back to title-challenging ways, therefore, seeing Tuanzebe moved on would not come as a huge surprise.
